The idea of quantitavive and qualitative progress

QUANTITY:


Interpretation: 

This document is a graph which represents the evolution of infant mortality rate by region from 1950 to 2015 and projections until 2050. Vertically we can notice the infant mortality rate, whereas horizontally we can see the years.                                                                                       At first sight, we can see that all the trends are decreasing, which is a positive worldwide evolution. Nowadays, more babies stay alive than 50 years ago. Then, from the 1960 we can notice that the majority of the curve is suddenly dropping and they keep this dynamics until today. They are expected to stay stable in the future.                                                                           However, a yellow curve is left apart from the other. It represents Africa. In 1950, Africa was already the last country in term of infant mortality rate, but it was equal to Asia. After that, it started progressing slowly, with difficulties, whereas Asia and the other were declining. Africa is still very far from the other trends.


QUALITY

Most children acquire HIV from their mothers during pregnancy, birth or through breastfeeding, and, without care and treatment, most of these babies will die in the first two years of life. Many die at home before they have been properly diagnosed and treated.

The Department of Health, UNICEF and other partners are working on a comprehensive approach to protecting children from HIV and prolonging their lives. This means providing a complete package of services in the community, linked to health clinics. The package includes HIV testing for pregnant women, antiretroviral drugs to reduce mother-to-child transmission, early diagnosis of HIV infection in babies, and early treatment, counselling and support for women and children who are infected.


Interpretation:

 This document is an article published on the Unicef website. It deals with a project which is set up in order to improve quality of childbirth in Africa. It shows the investment of many organizations to facilitate and secure the birth. The deplorable life conditions on this country emphazise the risk of HIV infection. This is one of the main issues which could complicate the birth and kill the baby.                                                                                                    Indeed, a lot of undeveloped countries don’t have access to medicine and are the victim of diseases. These organizations are trying to find new keys to help citizens from Africa, especially the women who are giving birth and the new babies.                                                                              This project consists of giving them complete packages composed of a panoply of precious and beneficial things such as a medicament, HIV test, antiretroviral drugs... This medical progress will make the infant mortality rate decrease considerably in Africa.

CONCLUSION:

These two documents embody the notion of progress in term of quantity and quality. They exemplify the two poles according to two different manners; the first one is a graph, whereas the second one is an article.                                                                                                                      Both document deals with the evolution of infant mortality rate in Africa. There are complementary. Indeed, the infant mortality rate is decreasing thanks to organizations which help pregnant women. Moreover, if some organizations are created and they have to set up packages it’s because the country needs it.
