Post 14: Outsourcing- Offshoring, two cartoons.

Document 1: 

Description:

- This cartoon by Natson is titled 'Cagle Cartoons'. It was published in 2012 during the united states presidential election and it deals with this event. The scene sets up in a very pleasant landscape. We can notice 3 characters who are speaking together.The character of Mitt Romney, who run for president in 2012 is standing in the cayman islands whereas his grandchildren  are sitting in a boat which probably belongs to the Ronmey's family. Next to him and at the center of the cartoon, there is a huge safe full of dollars. He is dragging the sand in order to put his money inside.  The name of his boat "belivin' in america" it's also the name of a book which summurises his wishes and his plans for job and economy growth in America 

Interpretation:

- On the one hand, It's quite obvious that the author wanted to raise awarness about mitt Ronmey's fortune insofar as he represented the safe at the center of the cartoon, it means that it must be at the center of our attention. Maybe we should question ourself, where does this amount of money come from and where did he keep it?

Although it's not apparent, Mitt Ronmey has millions of dollars of his personal wealth in investment funds set up in the Cayman Islands, a notorious Caribbean tax haven. Romney has used a variety of techniques to help minimize the taxes on his estimated $250 million fortune. This procesus it's absolutely illegal and unfair and it's another reason wich justify why he is standing in the caymans island.

- On the other hand, during a speech on june 2012, Obama called Ronmey an outsourcing pioneer. It's a pertinent reflexion, indeed outsourcing and offshoring are the points that Ronmey insist on during his campaign. Outsourcing means relocating companies whitin the country, and offshoring deals with the relocation of companies overseas in a low cost labbor country. 
The cartoon is cleary criticising this approach and it puts Ronmey's interest at the peak. The cartoon suggests that Ronmey is only interested in making money and he doesn't care about American worker's condition: some will be constrained to move to the other side of the country if they want to keep their jobs, other will loose they jobs at the expents of the country economy's benefit. 

- It's ironical from his grandchildren to idealize him as a president. It shows that his approach is not the best, in fact the only citizens who are supporting him are his grandchildren.

- Finally, if we take into consideration all these arguments, we can laugh about his boat’s name. Actually, he believes in America because its citizens will bring him wealth. He believes that they will vote for him but he doesn’t really feel concerned about his country’s welfare.

- The spaces tackled by this cartoon are tax havens, famous countries, often island, reputated for not taxing on wealth. It's the main reason why people sent their money there. Moreover, it deals with Outsourcing so by consequence, there is an exchange of jobs within the same country, and offshoring profits refers to the sent of your money on tax havens. This exchange is virtual, they don't bring billet to the caymans, everything is made through electronical devices.






Document 2:

Description:

- This cartoon by geek and poke was published in 2008. We can see 3 simple frames with 2 man within. They are probably CEO (chieve executive officier) and they are speaking togheter. Through their faces we can guess that they are surprise or shocked.

Interpretation:

- Even if they seem to have a normal conversation, they are actually speaking about exploitation. In fact, they are CEO of a company who offshores production and jobs in a low cost labor country in order to have benefits. The fact of displacing the production in a country where it's cheaper enable big companies to save money at the expent of low cost employees. The more they reduce wages the more they save money. 

- Last but not least, this technique is however debatable because it leads to exploitation. Once they found people who are satisfied to work a lot for a small amount of money, they are likely to exploite them. 
Here, the last baloon shows the stupidity of these man who are blinded by money and who don't understand that they have to be fair with their employees, because, before beeing employees they are human and their rights have to be respected.


- The spaces concerned are the developped and developping countries. Indeed, the production is offshored to developping countries because of the low cost labbor, and once the product is created, companies bring them back to sell them in developped countries. Consequently, there is an exchange of product between both spaces.
